The Old National Road
Originally known as the Cumberland Road, it was the first major improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Built between 1811 and 1837, the 620-mile (1,000 km) road that started near the east coast in Cumberland Maryland and stopped at Vandalia, Illinois, which was the capital of Illinois at the time. The Indiana portion was completed in 1834 with the completion of the White River bridge.
